What’s trending: are 70s interiors making a comeback?

70s retro interiors

It’s time to get groovy – from psychedelic prints and patterns, wood furniture, to warm, earthy colourways, 70s style is back on the rise in interior design…

Trends naturally ebb and flow, or it could be nostalgia that’s fuelling the return of retro, but one thing is certain – 70s interiors are having a resurgence in popularity. Picture conversation pits, plush seating, wood drenching, geometric shapes and forms, rattan furniture, and saturated sunset shades.

Also on my radar…

While 70s-style coloured pine cabinetry might have been a look in the past, bring wood to modern times with rich walnut and grainy oak. To nail the look, pair your wood cupboards with earthy tiles and paint, and add a touch of pattern with speckled terrazzo surfaces.

You could even opt for a curved, fluted island, a feature wall using timber panelling, or a retro freestanding piece. Here, we debate this material’s practicality in kitchens and look at stunning examples of timeless design.

With the rise of 70s interiors, you mustn’t be surprised that avocado bathrooms are also making a comeback. • From swirls and curves to abstract geometrics, mix and match groovy patterns to add depth and drama to your home.
  • Elevate a plain corner or your bedside table with statement lighting. Chrome is a particularly popular finish at the moment, as is the mushroom-style shape.
  • Infuse your interiors with warmth with the help of retro, earthy colourways – think deep brown, burnt orange, moss green, and muted mustard, whether it’s through plush seating, a tactile rug or new breakfast ceramics.
