Renovation tips and advice from real-life homeowners

Reno tips

Thinking about finally starting that renovation project you’ve been dreaming about? We chat to real-life homeowners who have been there and done that, and ask them what advice they would pass on to others looking to do the same…

One of the best spots for finding tips, advice, and inspiration for your renovation is social media (check us out over on @kbbmagazine), and we certainly love following the progress unfold, from the planning stage all the way to the final reveal and every milestone or hiccup in between.

So, if you are about to embark on a transformation journey or already in the midst of refreshing your interiors, we’ve asked six Instagrammers to share their top renovation tips and words of encouragement.

From taking your time to research to prioritising your personal style, read on and save these nuggets of advice for your very own home improvement project…

1. @106renovationproject

Get all the help you can, especially in the early stages. Having family and friends involved not only keeps the momentum going but also makes the experience far more enjoyable.

A task shared really is a task halved. We were lucky to have loved ones lend a hand with everything from stripping wallpaper and lifting carpets to clearing out the garden. Even help with the whitewash coat across the whole house made a huge difference. Don’t be afraid to ask, it’ll save you time, energy, and maybe even your sanity!

2. @alittledetached

As an impatient renovator who loves to jump head first into new ideas just as soon as I’ve thought them up, I’ve had to gradually learn the benefits of taking the time to fully research and prepare for every project before starting.

Gather everything you think you’ll need (tools, materials, manpower) before starting – trust me, it will save loads of time and resources in the long run, and prevent you from being tempted to cut corners or spend more money to rush in supplies last minute.

3. @bessieshome

Stick to what you love and don’t be afraid to give things a go! It’s so easy to get caught up in what’s trending, but the spaces I love most in my home are the ones where I’ve trusted my own style; even if it’s not what everyone else is doing. Your home should feel like you. Most rooms in my home include a bit of DIY – whether it’s panelling, upcycling furniture, laying flooring, or just getting stuck in with a paintbrush.

I’m not a professional and I’ve definitely made mistakes, but I’ve learned so much and saved a lot along the way. There’s something really satisfying about stepping back and knowing you’ve done it yourself – you get a real sense of pride. And a simple tip but one that’s so important: always test your paint swatches! I’ve skipped that step before (you know us DIY girlies want everything done immediately) and ended up repainting the whole room. Lesson learned!

4. @danisdomain

If you have an awkward space to fill, or have an area you’re not sure what to do with, try using cut-to-size MDF fixed onto brackets to create ‘bespoke’ shelving where you can display your favourite things, rather than keep them hidden away. It’s a really cost-effective way of transforming a space and provides endless styling opportunities, too.

5. @thehouseof_willow

Start by understanding how you live, especially your ‘drop zones’ – the spots where everyday clutter like bags, clothes, or post naturally ends up. Design with these in mind, creating beautiful storage solutions that suit your lifestyle rather than disrupt it. For me, thoughtful storage is always at the heart of good design!

Planning is everything when it comes to renovating. Before you start, map out your paint colours, lighting, and key furniture pieces, to make sure everything works together and fits the space. And when it comes to choosing colours, patterns, and pieces in general, go with what you truly love, not just what’s trending. Trends come and go, but your personal style will always feel right at home.
