Plywood kitchen cabinets design ideas and inspiration

Warm, durable, and beautifully understated, plywood has evolved from a budget basic into a design-forward favourite in kitchen design.

Whether you’re drawn to exposed edges, sculptural forms, or the material’s sustainable credentials, KBB journo Yvette Filer reveals how to incorporate plywood in a way that elevates your space – along with the key practicalities to consider to ensure your kitchen stands the test of time.

Uncommon Projects choose birch plywood for their kitchens because of its stability and strength. Plywood has become a go-to choice for contemporary kitchens thanks to its strength, warmth, and architectural look. Essentially made by bonding layers of wood veneer at alternating angles, it is far more stable than MDF, meaning that it is less likely to warp or twist – a real advantage in busy, humid kitchens.

Its strength also makes it ideal for carcasses, allowing for larger panels, clean-lined cabinetry, and even sculptural details such as curved islands or open shelving. However, it is worth bearing in mind that visible edges need sealing to protect against moisture, and quality varies. Where possible, opt for furniture-grade ply like birch for the best durability and finish.

While plywood works well with a natural finish, you can also opt for veneer. This is where finishes such as oak, walnut or birch sit directly on the surface while preserving rigidity. For a sleek, modern twist, you’re likely to come across Fenix or Formica-faced plywood. These are highly practical laminate finishes available in a wide array of colours.

Costs can quickly total up for premium bespoke builds. But for the more budget-conscious, many brands can design plywood fronts compatible with off-the-shelf kitchens from retailers such as Ikea and Howdens, for a high-end, tailored look at an affordable cost.
