How to add a bit of Art Deco splendour into your interiors

Art Deco interiors

Art Deco is back on our radar, so we’re showing you how to take a page out of The Great Gatsby and infuse your space with glitz and glamour…

Gold, Gatsby-esque chandeliers, hexagonal mirrors, and that distinctive, shell-like pattern… It’s all part of the magnificence of Art Deco. The design style dominated the Roaring Twenties, going hand in hand with lavish parties and flappers. And now, it seems we’re bringing some of that stardust back to life.

“Art Deco blurs the line between furniture and fine jewellery,” says Lena Gierasinska, head of product and displays at Barker and Stonehouse. “It’s where function is adorned with finery. Geometric motifs and stepped forms echo the bold silhouettes of 1930s skyscrapers, etched into surfaces or set within intricate marquetry. Every detail is considered.”

Shelley Cochrane, accessories buyer at Furniture Village, agrees and points out the structured forms and visual order defining the style, sprinkled, however, with a dose of theatrical flair. “It’s in the angular grace of a chair, wrapped in jewel-toned velvet and trimmed with polished brass, or the dramatic presence of a pedestal dining table, its base sculpted like a monument, topped with veined marble or glass,” she adds. “These interiors marry the architectural with the artistic.”

So, how do you go about incorporating the Art Deco aesthetic into your home? Melissa Denham, interior design expert at Hammonds Furniture, suggests repeating patterns of squares, chevrons, zigzags, or triangles on your walls, bedspreads, and flooring. “Then, it’s all about golds and metallics. Embrace man-made materials such as glass, plastic, and chrome, alongside plush fabrics such as velvet, for texture and depth,” she adds.

Kris Manalo, creative lead at Atkin and Thyme, also advises pairing these materials with dramatic colours and effects such as stained wood and lacquer to create an extravagant, yet elegant, look.
