Forget flashy chandeliers and glitzy dressing tables; the secret to a luxurious bedroom lies in the thoughtful details…
Back in the ‘90s, obscenely expensive sofas, gold chandeliers, and bed frames taking a page out of Queen Elizabeth’s Balmoral Castle sourcebook would be a proper indicator of a deluxe bedroom. But fast forward a few decades later – and for reasons from the cost of living to Covid – and our homes’ luxe-o-meter looks slightly different.
Yes, when it comes to designing a rich-looking sleep space, well-made furniture and plush fabrics still go a long way; but creating an opulent scheme is so much more than that. So, I decided to talk to the experts to find out what a luxury bedroom looks like in 2026, and how you can design your own with a few decisive steps.

Opt for a quality bed and fine linen
The general consensus seems to be that it all starts with the star of the room – the bed. According to Emily and Jonathan Attwood, founders of Scooms, “Creating a truly luxurious bedroom begins with the foundations, with a high-quality bed and mattress being your first investment. With these, always get the biggest size the room can take and invest in the highest-quality, natural materials, as the bed and mattress will be with you a long time.”

Nick Booth, managing director at Harrison Spinks, also believes that a luxury mattress should be expertly crafted for optimum support. “When choosing a luxury mattress, key factors such as firmness, spine alignment, and the quality of materials all play a crucial role in supporting the body and enhancing sleep quality, as well as how it’s made,” he explains. That being said, it’s worth trying wool and viscose mattresses, which are temperature-regulating and breathable, while models with micro spring technology will perfectly contour to your body, allowing for restful sleep.
Then of course, a splendid bed deserves the richest bedding, so it might be best to opt for 100% Egyptian cotton or natural linen bed sheets, in classic tones such as crisp whites, soft greys, or blushes, to evoke that luxury look and feel. And as Chris Tattersall, sleep expert and managing director at Woolroom, says, true luxury means longevity. “When you invest in natural bedding, you’re creating a boutique, hotel-worthy sleep environment that will have you drifting off deeply night after night, year after year.”

Silk bedding is another glamorous choice – it’s recommended for preventing hair breakage and is breathable, too. “As well as being a beautiful and luxurious fabric, silk is breathable and is therefore an excellent choice for bed linen all year round, but especially during the summer months,” says Georgia Metcalfe, creative director and founder of French Bedroom. Pair with extra-fluffy pillows covered in silk pillowcases, and your bedroom will get an instant luxury upgrade.

Introduce rich palettes and tactile accents
It’s no secret that leaning into dark, moody tones can make a bedroom feel extra-luxurious. But you can also opt for a pared-back, earthy palette to achieve a warm-minimalist scheme that exudes effortless luxury. Rich blues and burgundies will add character through bursts of colour, while different tones of cream, terracotta, and green will result in a grounded look.

“A muted, neutral palette is a simple way to bring the quiet luxury style into your bedroom,” says Melissa Denham, interior design expert at Hammonds Furniture. She suggests using earthy or lighter browns and beiges to form the main colour scheme, then adding sage and olive-coloured features to complement the natural shades.
“Finish with warm cream furnishings to add balance and brighten up smaller spaces,” continues Melissa. And if you prefer those darker shades but fear they might end up feeling intimidating, Lisa Hensby, founder and creative director of Lisa Hensby Design & Build Studio, suggests introducing them through bedding or upholstery rather than committing to full dark walls.

To add depth, interest, and a cosy touch, designers also recommend aiming for well-crafted furniture with tactile elements. “Nothing says luxury like quality materials. From your bed to the dressing table and curtains, there are several ways to bring high-quality finishes to your room,” says Melissa. “Natural materials like hardwood or stone are sturdy and stylish and can be used for many bedroom furnishings.”

Kate Palmer, creative director at The Painted Furniture Company, agrees, while pointing out that luxury isn’t only visual: “Tactile touches such as soft-close drawers, smooth painted finishes, and considered handles will add a quiet quality you’ll feel every time you use the space.” Plus, another luxurious feature you don’t see but can definitely feel is underfloor heating, which is guaranteed to wrap the bedroom in lavish warmth.
Consider velvet cushions, wool throws, and textured rugs, too, either used on their own, or layered one on top of the other. “Positioning a runner or rug either beside or underneath the bed is a perfect way to maximise the space, whilst incorporating sumptuous new textures and beautiful designs,” notes Kirsty Barton, brand storytelling manager at Alternative Flooring.

Go bespoke
Keep in mind that custom bedroom storage tailored to your needs can be the epitome of luxury – think about exactly what you want your wardrobes and chests of drawers to look like. And if you feel like going the extra mile, why not splurge for your very own dressing room, Carrie Bradshaw-style? These have been growing in popularity for some time now, and for good reason.

“We recommend homeowners pass on shortterm trends in favour of something timeless they’ll love for years to come,” says Philipp Nagel, director of Neatsmith. “Rather than an afterthought, bespoke wardrobes are an investment that can elevate a bedroom and serve as a focal point.”
Philipp finds that many individualise their fitted furniture by choosing bespoke colours, too. “This allows them to colour-match other key pieces of furniture and give their concept a unique, individual quality.” Premium hardware carefully made for your wardrobe is also key – the right handle can really make your joinery stand out.

For an extra-luxurious touch to your bedroom, how about a glass-fronted wardrobe? It allows you to find specific items without even needing to open the doors, while making the room feel larger and brighter, thanks to the glass’s reflective qualities. Internal LED lighting will also elevate the design.
A clean space
Apart from opting for bespoke storage solutions to keep your bedroom organised, designers also recommend removing any unnecessary items so the space does not feel overbearing. “Luxury is always quality over quantity,” says Melissa. “Make sure you add excellent furnishings without too many distractions; an overcrowded room can hinder this theme, so taking time to declutter your floor space is vital. Choose what should be on show to fit the luxury design, get rid of unwanted items, and store cherished possessions if they don’t quite fit the brief.”
Melissa also suggests incorporating rounded shapes and curved edges to create clean lines that achieve a smooth, effortless flow which oozes sumptuousness.

The bedroom lighting
Your choice of lighting is important, too. In fact, Julian Page, head of design at BHS, argues that lighting is the foundation of a luxury bedroom, with different sources contributing to a restful and luxurious scheme. “Layered lighting – from a central fitting to bedside and wall lights – creates a softer, more flattering atmosphere than a single overhead,” he explains. “Dimmable switches and warm white bulbs take you from bright and functional to soft and cocooning.”

“The right fixtures do more than illuminate,” adds Helen Pett, brand ambassador at Arteriors. “They sculpt the space and highlight design details, while creating an atmosphere of calm and refinement. An intricate chandelier or pendant brings a sense of grandeur, while bedside lamps offer intimacy and practicality, and subtle wall or recessed lights can add a soft, flattering glow that transforms the room as daylight fades.”
The finishing touches
Finally, as with every design, it’s the thoughtful, last-minute additions that can make all the difference. Achieve a warmth boost, for example, with the inclusion of a stove, or even smart heating within your bedding. “Heated technology in bedding is the new hallmark of a truly refined bedroom retreat,” says Maria Bullen, marketing director and comfort expert at Dreamland UK.
“Bedding and blankets now offer features such as dual-zone digital controllers which allow each sleeper to tailor the warmth to their personal preference, quietly elevating comfort without compromising on style. Waking up in a bed that feels perfectly cosy from first moment to last conveys real luxury.”

For something simpler, consider antique family heirlooms, a humidifier with an essential oils compartment, or a work of art that creates a sense of serenity. Moreover, seating in the form of plush sofas and velvet armchairs will add another layer of luxury.
“Start with pieces that support your everyday routine: a jewellery tray that keeps things in one place, a diffuser or candle that adds a gentle scent and a bit of calm,” advises Sara Miller, creative director and founder of Sara Miller London. “It’s these simple additions that turn a bedroom from something functional into a space that feels decadent and somewhere you genuinely enjoy spending time in.”
Ultimately, there is no one definition of luxury. So, before designing your very own deluxe haven, consider your needs and how you’ll be using the space, and start moodboarding!
