Talking Renovations: coming up with the brief for my ensuite design

Talking renovations The brief

I am rejoining the renovation club with a hip-to-gable loft conversion with a rear dormer – here, I’m breaking down the process of coming up with the brief for my dream ensuite design…

I appreciate this is a good problem to have, but I’ve found trying to narrow down my ensuite moodboard and design wishlist incredibly overwhelming. Dare I say, even a bit stressful. It’s how I imagine a wedding magazine editor must feel when they get married. So many choices, options, practicalities to consider – plus, my vision and budget don’t exactly align. (It’s what happens when you stare at £50k+ bathrooms every day.)

Also, my tastes are completely contradictory – I like a bit of this, a bit of that, a dash of something else… It was obvious I needed some help. So, I decided to reach out to two incredibly talented bathroom designers – Rosie Proto from Pier1 Bathrooms and Jo Wilkinson from West One Bathrooms – to see if they could put something together for me.

The brief for the ensuite design

I started off by asking for a walk-in shower, a practical vanity area, and a wall-hung toilet. “My style is incredibly eclectic,” I warned them. “I suppose I’m quite classic-contemporary. I like non-bathroom bathrooms with industrial-Victorian twists.” (See what I mean?!) I suggested a porcelain wood-effect door, some statement marble somewhere, along with a fluted or arched shower screen.

As for materials, I envisioned nickel, matt black, or aged brass. “I’m very ‘anti’ grout lines – especially in the shower area, so we’re considering shower panels in the wet zone, or possibly some large-format tiles,” I continued in my brief to them. Other requests for the ensuite design included a half wall in the shower area, a towel rail, and a large, round electric mirror.

Moodboard edit for the ensuite design, with marble tiles, wood flooring and panelling, a classic basin tap, black knurled handles and a black LED circular mirror.
1. Savoy Novo, rectangle 60 x 120 x 0.8cm tile, £98 per sq m, Ca’ Pietra. 2. Brass knurled T bar handle in black, £12, Pushka Home. 3. Frame 80cm round bathroom mirror in black, £440, Roper Rhodes. 4. Arborelle natural oak fluted wall panel, £129 per 2.4m x 0.6m panel, Naturewall. 5. Loire oak matt chevron wood-effect porcelain floor tile, £28.95 per sq m, Tile Mountain. 6. Armstrong wall-mounted dual-lever mixer in nickel, £824.76, Perrin & Rowe.

For the colours, I asked for neutral yet warm, with splashes of colour. “We have a dark navy, velvet bed, so a nod to this would be good. Also, to give you some context for the other spaces, the walk-in wardrobe is going to be very quirky, think Art Deco and tassels,” I said. (My husband doesn’t know about the tassels yet!)

Problems for them to overcome would be the window on the far wall, and also the arched doorway I’d like to include on the opposite side.

So, stay tuned to see how the two designers bring my vision to life! In the meantime, you can watch the renovation unfold over on my Instagram account @georginakbbmag.
